Good morning. Thank goodness for the Google calendar design team--if it weren't for them, I wouldn't know that that today is Sesame Street's 40th anniversary. Let's see if I can't summon up a little false nostalgia for the show that ushered in the age of "educational" children's television. Yes, I think it's safe to blame Maria and Luis for the ubiquity of Dora the Explorer. (Am I the only one who finds the near-rhyme annoying? I want to call her "Dora the Explora." Well, that's not the only annoying thing about Dora, but I do have other things to do today, and--much like Twilight vampires--Dora is one of those things that can get me ranting incoherently for pages.)
Anyway, the best thing about Sesame Street was easily Oscar the Grouch. In a world of annoyingly cheerful and friendly people, Oscar was a breath of fresh air. (Even as a little kid, I thought Big Bird was a whiny pussy. Snuffleupagus was o.k. though.) He was mean, he was messy, and he was the only one who realized that there was something a little wrong with these people who were obsessed with the alphabet and counting to twelve. Cookie Monster was the other bright spot. Could anything be stupider than the modern PC effort to make Cookie Monster appreciative of fresh vegetables? Cookie Monster represented the unbridled id of preschoolers. And that was all about the cookies. No one who has spent more than 4 minutes alone with a 2-year-old believes that they dream of demolishing some carrots.
Anyway, new stuff for today includes the update to our
Issues with Project Runway and the
Daily Fluff. Have a good weekend and such.
