Currently, I'm in a heated discussion with a good friend over the levels of celebrity smugness.  This is important because if you're going to create a Celebrity Smug meter, you need to have some kind of agreed-on standard for maximum smugness.

My friend has put forth the position that Richard Gere should be the maxium smugness level, as nothing is as smug as divorcing Cindy Crawford and blathering on about the Dalai Lama.  And while I grant that Gere is immensely unlikeable, I feel that this actually decreases his smugness rating, as waning star = waning smug rating.  I think that Alec Baldwin or George Clooney are much better candidates for maximum smugness, though I admit that Baldwin's SNL appearance with Sarah Palin was funny and lowered his smugness quotient.

Which leaves the question of who is the smuggest celebrity.  Suggestions?

So, when recounting my fandom for a certain QB, you feel free to tell the online universe I'm your sister. However when arguing about who is the most smug actor in Hollywood, I am just a good friend? Does this have anything to do with the fact that I am right? Richard Gere is the be all and end all of smugness in Hollywood. Hands-down. His star may be waning, oh wait, he's in a damn Nicholas Sparks movie (Am I the only female in the world who is not manipulated by the romantic claptrap that Mr. Sparks churns out like he's writing for true romance magazine?), which guarantees him a few more years of the A list. Remember smug and cocky are two entirely different things. Gere is smug bastard.

Alec Baldwin and George Clooney seem to have asense of humor about themselves, which help make their smugness rating less than Gere.

Y'all are equating political activism and tree hugging to smugness. Gere's smugness is woven into the fiber of his being. His buddhism only adds to his overall smugness. Celebrity activism is not smug, just self-important. P.S Tom Cruise is not smug. Cocky, delusional, completely off his rocker, yes but not smug.
