My Top Ten Movies of 2008

by Snickers

#1-  The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

I’ve been a ‘fan’ of Brad Pitt going all the way back to Interview with a Vampire, Legends of the Fall and 12 Monkeys where he displays a varying number of different acting abilities. In ‘Curious’ I have even more respect for him as you watch his life age backwards in a world filled with mystery, hope and wonder. The technical effects have no doubt been the biggest subject the media and blogs have hit upon, but for me it was Cate Blanchett’s character, and the love story between her and Pitt that really stole the show.  At almost three hours, I can see why it hasn’t done as well as it should have in the theaters, but on DVD or Blu-Ray this movie will enter cult status before you know it

#2- Slumdog Millionaire

It was a tough call for me to pick between this story and ‘Curious’ for my top spot, but Slumdog is just about an equal to that movies’ love story. Danny Boyle, having conquered ganster movies, sci-fi with Sunshine, and now drama with Slumdog, has proven to be the Next Tarantino that simply outdoes Tarantino in almost every aspect. The story of a boy who goes on India’s version of ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ to find a lost love is a touching tale of violence, humor and bonding love that it’s likely to be looked upon as a front runner in many Oscar circles.

#3- The Wrestler

Everyone keeps talking about how this is Mickey Rourke’s supposed ‘comeback’ film. Well, I for one always thought Rourke could act his fucking ass off, so screw the critics on that one. Rourke delivers the best acting performance from a male lead I’ve seen in a LONG time, and along with Sean Penn in Milk, the two best performances of the year. As a life long wresting fan up until about 10 years ago this movie held a personal interest for me beyond the story of washed up pro wrestler Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson. If there is a better story of love and life lost while coupled with fiery pride than ‘The Wrestler’ I’d like to know where it is.

#4-  Let the Right One In

This movie just completely obliterates any vampire film I’ve ever seen. It shows that you can take a cliché aspect of the horror genre and inject the heart and love more befit of a movie like Titanic.  The story revolves around a cold (Isn’t it always) season in Sweden where a shy, picked-on boy befriends a hungry twelve year old vampire and starts a most unlikely friendship. The movie is dark, gruesome, but fitted with enough heart and soul to melt all the snow in Sweden. Besides the occasionally annoying subtitles, this is one vampire movie NO one should miss.

#5- The Wackness

Anyone who knows me knows I love me some good drug movies. The Wackness is one of the really better ones. Ben Kingsley, the poor bastard, has to put on one of the best acting jobs in the world and in such a fiercely competitive year for male actors, I have to say that it’s a crying shame he’ll most likely get overlooked as an aging psychiatrist pothead who has as many, if not more, problems than the people he sees. The scene is New York circa 1994, hip-hop was burgeoning everywhere and the culture reflected here in The Wackness is sure to wake up some lost memories within us all from that generation.

#6- In Bruges

Ralph Fiennes plays the best mobster villain of ALL TIME in this movie about a hitman who accidently shoots and kills a small boy instead of his intended mark. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson put on the best acting shoes of their careers and together with Fiennes put together the best crime movie of the year. Add a splash of humor though and you have one of the best gangster flicks of all time.

#7- The Dark Knight

What more can be said about this picture? It is truly the ‘Godfather Part 2’ of comic book movies, and Christopher Nolan deserves a best director nomination for his ability to get Heath Ledger to turn completely insane for the duration of the flick. Ledger is so sickly good as the Joker in this film, they should name the supporting actor Oscar after him.

#8- Wall-E

Wall-E takes E.T. and Toy Story and puts them together and just pisses on those other movies. It’s heartwarming to see Wall-E interact with new life forms and I’m not sure if love has ever been so strong and heartwarming animated in the history of cartoons.

#9- Son of Rambow

Never has a movie made lately captured the magic of the early 1980’s as Son of Rambow has. Even though it’s a coming of age story set in Britain, I could totally relate to the over-active imaginations the kids in this story had. It’s the ultimate buddy story set during one of my favorite decades filled with enough humor that even haters of most British comedy would love.

#10- Burn After Reading

This great film is being sorely overlooked by most audiences because the trailers were absolutely terrible. The marketing guys behind this movie need tied to a tree and shot for dissing this movie so badly with those shitty trailers. It’s the direct opposite of ‘No Country For Old Men’ the masterpiece the Coen Brothers put out in 2007, and that’s a good thing as I’ve always been more a fan of their comedic work. Clooney and Pitt deliver big time in their roles, and John Malkovich is a riot in this thing as a high ranking CIA agent. You must see this film, and try to put the horrible trailer out of your mind while doing so.
